Alabama Flag
A red St. Andrew’s cross on a white background makes up the fairly simple design of Alabama’s flag. One very important fact about the Alabama State flag is the width of the red cross bars. Per state flag code the red bars in the St.Andrews cross have to be at least six inches wide and any small representations of Alabama flags that do not follow that law are not legally considered an Alabama flag. Some people believe, that the red saltire (another name for the cross of St. Andrews in heraldy) was designed to resemble an old Confederate Battle Flag. Sometimes the Alabama state flag is seen in square dimensions just like the old battleflags, but according to the rules in heraldy a cross of St. Andrews should be rectangular. The state flag for Alabama also is similar to other countries flags. The Union Flag of the United Kingdom has a Union Flag that represents the flag of St. Patrick and this part of the flag looks just like the Alabama state flag. But it is shown, that the origins of that flag can be traced back to Spain.
The history of the Alabama flag started when the flag design of a group of Montgommery women was accepted as an official flag. This was back in 1861 and actually flew in Alabama flag history only for a few weeks, when the severe weather damaged the flag. This Alabama flag pictured a Goddess of Liberty with a sword in her right hand and a small flag with one star in her left hand on the one side of t he flag and a cotton plant with a rattlesnake on the other side. Above the goddess the words “Independent now and forever” where shown in an arch.
