Algeria Flag

The Colors Of The Algerian Flag

The Algeria Flag is equal halves green and white, with a red star and crescent in the center where the green and white meet. The flag of Algeria was officially adopted in 1962, although a version of the Algerian flag that was similar to the official flag was in use for about ten years before the official flag was accepted. The design of the Algerian flag comes from the flag of Emir Abdel Kadir who ruled Algeria in the 1800’s. The Emir’s flag was two vertical bands of green and white and the flag of Algerian Regency which has a white crescent and star on a red background. The white half of the flag of Algeria stands for peace, the green half for Islam, and the red crescent and star represents the blood of the martyrs in the Algerian war for independence from 1954 to 1962.
