California Flag
The modern version of the California state flag is very similar to its original design. The California flag was officially adopted by California in 1911. California’s flag flew before 1911 for the first time during the so-called Bear Flag Revolt as flag for the California Republic. In 1953 the design of the California flag symbols were standardized and then also named “the Bear Flag”.
The current version of the flag of California has a white background with a red stripe at the bottom. In the upper left corner of the flag a red five-pointed star is above the main symbol. The biggest symbol on the Californian flag is the Grizzly bear. The grizzly bear faces to the left, towards the hoist. It is in the center of the flag on top of a patch of green grass. The bear shown on Californian flags is actually an extinct subspecies of the grizzly bear that was native to California. A not proofn tidbit about the California flag is a speculation that the five pointed star was designed leaning on the star for the Texas Republic and is supposed to represent strength.
The shades of the modern California flag are specified in two different color schemes.
The original California state flag was designed by William Todd on a fabric piece made out of new unbleached cotton. It is stated that the star represents the lone star of Texas and the bear was supposed to represent the many bears seen in California. The original California flag also displayed the words California Republic. In this original flag, the bear was a lot smaller and the star somewhat bigger. Both placed in the upper left corner with the words California Republic below. Some people say that the bear back then looked more like a pig than a bear.
