Croatia Flag
The Pan Slavic Croatia Flag
The Croatian flag is made up of three identical horizontal stripes in the pan-Slavic colors of red, white and blue. In the middle of the flag of Croatia is the national coat of arms of Croatia. The current flag design of red, white and blue with the coat of arms of Croatia prominently featured in the center has been used as the Croatian flag since 1848. Croatia used to be part of Yugoslavia. When Croatia was part of Yugoslavia the Croatian flag was the same, but where the coat of arms is placed in the Croatian flag today there was a five-pointed red star with a yellow border instead. The Croatian national flag became more important to the citizens of Croatia when the country was at war and throughout much of the 1990’s the Croatian people turned to their flag as a symbol of their pride in their country and their willingness to fight for their homeland. It’s not unusual for countries to have an upsurge in nationalism during a time of crisis and the Croatian people had renewed faith in the meaning of the Croatian flag during those violent times in the history of Croatia. The Croatian are still recovering from the war and conflicts that the country suffered during the last few decades but things are now beginning to return to normal for the Croatian people.
Croatia Today
Today Croatia is a much more peaceful country and the people of Croatia have returned to their normal lives. There is still a sense of fierce nationalism in the country however and the Croatian people, even those who have settled in other countries, continue to show their love of and pride in their home country of Croatia by displaying the flag of Croatia in their homes and businesses, taking to the streets during Croatian neighborhood festivals in major cities all over the world and carrying miniature flags of Croatia into soccer games and other events to show their pride in their heritage.
