Hawaii Flag

The Hawaii state flag shows of several colors, but has nothing of the beauty and vibrant colors of its state. The Ka Hae Hawai’i is the other name used in Hawaii for the flag of Hawaii. The Hawaiian flag represents the states history as a kingdom, republic, territory, protectorate and finally as a state. Hawaii’s flag is the only flag of the United States state flags to display a Union flag, the flag of the United kingdom of Great Britain and therefore the country that the United States fought for freedom from. The Union Flag is located in the upper right corner of the flag closest to the pole, also called the canton of the flag. The flag field of the state flag of Hawaii consists of horizontal red, blue and white stripes. There are eight striped representing the eight major islands composing the Hawaiian Islands. The stripes start with a white stripe at the top, followed by a blue and then by a red stripe. This sequence repeats and it ends in a red stripe.

The eight main islands represented in the Hawaii flag are Ni’ihau, Kaho’olawe, O’ahu, Kaua’I, Lana’I, Maui, Moloka’I and Hawai’i. The original Hawaiian flag is not accounted for and there is no sure date for when the first real Hawaii flag was flown. But to distinguish his flag from the one of the governor of Hawaii, King Kamehameha I purchased and designed his own flag in 1916 and therefore gave historical birth to the Ka Hae Hawai’i. Since 1990 Hawaii celebrates the Hawaii Flag Day on July 31st. The official Hawaii flag history can be found with the Hawaiian state government and some parts are even available on the states official web pages.
