Maine Flag

The Maine state flag is very much alike to the flags of Kentucky and Kansas in the property of bearing the states or a heraldic charge in the center of a dark blue field. For the Maine Flag, it is the state seal that can be seen on the blue background. So what does the Maine flag represent and what are the symbols displayed on the flag of Maine? The state seal of Maine shows two men holding up a shield. The one man holding the shield up is a farmer, the other one a seaman representing Maine's major connection between agriculture and the sea. In the center of the shield a moose rests under big pine tree.

Above the shield a red banner with the word “Dirigo” is displayed right beneath a North Star. Dirigo is the state of Maine’s state motto and means “I lead”. The star and motto together are both an indication for the leadership of the state of Maine. In the Maine flag description there are no official colors for the code of arms, but the blue in the background of Maine’s flag is specified as the United States national flag. Since the colors in the seal of Maine’s state flag are not determined there are several color variations from manufacturer to manufacturer. The original state of Maine flag had a buff colored background with a green pine tree and a blue North Star on top. Also different from the state’s flag design is the ensign, which is more a cross between the old and the new flag.

Maine’s state flag is also supposed to have a yellow silk fringe and a blue and white silk cord attached to the head when flown for official business. Pictures of Maine’s state flag can be found in history books and museums. Other sources for pictures of the Maine state flag can also be found online and with the state government of Maine.
