Manitoba Flag

Being a Canada provincial flag the Manitoba flag leaves quite an impression. With its vibrant red color background it also displays a Union Jack as well as parts of the coat of arms of Manitoba. Manitoba’s flag is not the only Canada provincial flag that looks just like that; Ontario’s flag is very similar to Manitoba’s. The decision to use this design for the flag of Manitoba was made after Canada replaced Canada’s Red Ensign with the Maple flag on the national flag. The British Union Jack is placed in the upper left corner of the flag and displays the colors red, white and blue.

The shield from the coat of arms is centered in the right half of the flag closer to the fly. Flags of Manitoba are supposed to have a proportion of 1:2. Similar to Alberta's flag and coat of arms, the Manitoba coat of arms shield displays the Cross of St.George in the upper part of the shield. It is in the colors white background with a red cross. The lower part of the shield shows a bison on a gray rock with a green background. The union jack in the upper left corner represents Manitoba’s link to the British and the symbol of St. George does the same. The Cross of St.George is actually part of England's flag and a symbol for England. The bison in the shield represents all bisons that roamed Manitoba’s plains and grounds. Manitoba adopted this design officially as the design of the flag of Manitoba on May 12th 1966. This is a little over 100 years after Manitoba entered the Confederation in 1870. The coat of arms also was adopted way earlier than the flag in 1905. The Manitoba flag earned the approval of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, when they used the Red Ensign as their flag with the replacement of the Coat of arms with the Manitoba coat of arms.
