Michigan Flag

The Michigan state flag belongs to a row of several United States state flags that have a dark blue background and bare the coat of arms in its center. The coat of arms on the flag of Michigan consists out of a light blue shield and an elk, a moose and an eagle surrounding the shield. The shield displays a rising sun in the background, a lake and a peninsula and a man with a long rifle and a raised hand. The man in the shield represents peace but also the ability to defend the rights. The animals on Michigan’s state flag are the great animals of Michigan, the elk and the moose and the bald eagle stands for the United States. The Michigan state flag also displays three different Latin mottos, one being the Michigan state motto. Above the shield and above the eagle on a red ribbon the United States motto “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one”) is the first motto displayed on the Michigan flag. The shield itself holds the word and motto “Tuebor”, which means I will defend”. The Michigan state motto is displayed right beneath the shield on a white ribbon. The Michigan state motto is “Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumcpice”, which means translated “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you”.

The current version of the flag of Michigan is the third official state of Michigan flag and was officially adopted in 1911. The first official Michigan flag had a portrait of the first governor of Michigan Stevens T. Mason in its center on one side and the United States coat of arms on the other one. The flag was changed in 1865, when the portrait of the governor was replaced with the Michigan Coat of arms and then later on both sides of the Michigan flag are changed to show the coat of arms of Michigan only.
