Minnesota Flag
The Minnesota state flag is yet again another state flag that shows the states seal on a blue background. Minnesota’s state flag actually has a royal blue background, is rimmed by a small golden band and has a golden fringe. In the center of the blue field is a white circle with a yellow border. Within this circle an inner golden circle surrounds scenes from the Minnesota state seal. These scenes are placed on a blue field of the same color as the flag background itself. The white rim of the outer circle displays 19 five pointed stars, representing the state of Minnesota as the 19th state to enter the United States union. In the lower semi-circle the Word Minnesota in red letters is identifying the flag as Minnesota’s flag. The arrangement of the stars in the white field as five groups of stars (four groups of four stars and one group of three stars on the top) is another representation of a five pointed star. The big star on the top of the stars stands for the North Star. Minnesota’s state flower, the showy lady slipper, surrounds the seal and this wreath also holds three dates. 1819 is the year that Fort Snelling was founded and established, 1858 is the year that Minnesota entered the union as the 19th state and 1893 is the date when the flag was officially adopted.
The original flag of Minnesota that was adopted in 1893 was designed and created by Mrs. Amelia Hyde. This Minnesota flag was white on one side and light blue on the other side. The center of the flag showed the seal of Minnesota and a wreath of white moccasin flowers around the seal. A red ribbon held the motto. The same dates were also in golden letters on the flag as well as the 19 stars in star formation. This flag was very expensive to manufacture and then replaced by a slightly different version in 1957.
