Mississippi Flag
The state flag of Mississippi has been in use in its current form since 1894, the Mississippi’s adoption year. Its design is leaned on the “Stars and Bars” of the Confederate flag as well as the Confederate Battle Flag. The Mississippi flag is the only United States state flag that has true Confederate battle flag elements in its design. The Mississippi state flag had a tricolor as a background that includes the colors blue, white and red from top to bottom.
The square in the upper left corner that represents the Confederate Battle flag has a white-rimmed dark blue cross on a red background. Thirteen stars are spread over the cross representing the thirteen original colonies and states.
Mississippi’s state flag before the current flag was the “Magnolia flag” from 1861. The name for this Mississippi flag came from its design, which had a Bonnie Blue Flag with white star in the upper left corner (the canton of the flag), a white background with a red stripe vertically on the right end and a magnolia tree in its center.
The Mississippi legislature wanted to introduce a new flag of Mississippi in 2001, that replaced the Confederate Battle flag in the upper left with a dark blue field with the 19 smaller stars in circles and one bigger star in the center. The thirteen stars in the outer ring were supposed to represent the thirteen original states, whereas the other 6 in a smaller circle represent the 6 states that entered the United States before Mississippi and the center bigger star was supposed to represent Mississippi itself as the 20th state to enter the Union. The voters of Mississippi defeated this draft of the flag. Mississippi’s flags are flown with pride and patriotism. Mississippi’s flag can be seen at the city and state hall in its capital Jackson.
The rich history on Mississippi’s flag can be found in good history books and is also taught to the students of Mississippi. For the younger once there are color sheets for Mississippi flags for educational purposes and just for fun.
