Nautical Flag
Nautical flags, also often called maritime flags or marine flags, are flags designated for the use on watercrafts and boats. Marine signal flags as well as any naval flags are essential at sea and the rules and regulations for the flying and displaying of such flags on boats are strictly enforced.
There are several different types of nautical flags. Ensigns, Jacks, Rank flags, Pennants and nautical signal flags are all part of the Marine flags. Ensigns are the flags that are usually required when entering or leaving a harbor, or when sailing though foreign waters or when a warship signals a boat to flag their ship with their ensign. They are often also called battle ensigns for they are flown during war and battle at all times. A jack is f lag that is usually flown at the head of the ship usually when the ship is dressed for a certain occasion. Merchant ships for example are not allowed to fly the Union Flag and only a few civilian jacks exist. Lots of warships also show the rank of the commanding officer with flags flown near the top of the ship. Pennants are usually of triangular shape wide in the back at the pole and narrow in the front. There exist several versions of pennants including church pennants, commissioning pennants and others.
There is also a very important system of international maritime signal flags. Each of these flags displays a letter of the signal alphabet to or from a ship. The International maritime signal flags belong to the International Code of Signals.
The nautical flags alphabet can be used to for example spell out a message to the receiver. Another way to use the nautical code flags is for example a diving boat raises The “A” flag and indicates hereby that they are not able to move from the location because the have divers in the water. In this case each of the nautical flags have a nautical flag meaning associated with the letter. Nautical code flags can also be used to from a code word that is listed in well-published handbooks and therefore a specific meaning can be derived from the book and the code word.
In some water sport races the letters from the nautical alphabet have a race related meaning that the people on other boats or on land can communicate such events as preparation or start coming up to the boats on the water. To display a signal that is meant to stay for longer periods of time, nautical flagpoles are available and can be used in such cases.
If you are interested n learning the different ways of communicating with the flags there are miniature nautical signal flags available together with different handbooks on code and messaging.
