Nevada Flag

The state flag of Nevada has a dark blue background and a white star in the upper left corner of the flag. The star is surrounded by several other important symbols. Right below the star in yellow color is the name of the State, NEVADA. Right above the star is a yellow ribbon displaying the words “BATTLE BORN” which indicates Nevada’s induction into the union of the United States during the American Civil war. Below the star and below the state name are two sprigs of the state flower of Nevada, sagebrush with yellow flowers. The current Nevada state flag was designed in 1926 and adopted in 1929. The designer Louis Shellback III was the winner of a contest held in 1926 to find a proper design for the state flag. One reason to find a better design for the Nevada flag was that the then used flag was very expensive to manufacture because it was so intricate and had several different colors.

Louis Schellbach III won 25 Dollars and according to the governor the honor of having designed a United States state flag. Louis’ design removed the ornate coat of arms of Nebraska from the flag, but kept the same blue background to the flag. In the Nevada flag’s history there have been several issues before the new Schellbach design was accepted. The Schellbach design did not include the state name and a placing and the proper font style were very hard to find. It was not easy to please all the parties having a say in the matter of the Nevada flag. There were proposed amendments to add the word Nevada between the points of the star as the first amendment and also a version that used a bigger size word extending past the points. When the bill was signed, the Governor actually did not sign the bill that all the parties a greed on and this mistake was not discovered till 60 years after the fact in 1989.
