187 New Brunswick Flag
With its very impressive design, the New Brunswick flag was ranked 18th best flag of all United States state flags and Canada provincial flags in a survey in 2001. The current flag of New Brunswick was adopted in 1965. Its design was taken from the coat of arms of New Brunswick.
The main symbol on the flag of New Brunswick is a Spanish galley, a traditional representation of ships in heraldy. The meaning of the ship on the New Brunswick flag represents the province’s shipbuilding, which was one of the main industries in New Brunswick, when the coat of arms was designed. The background behind the ship is golden and three wavy lines, blue, white and blue represent the sea below the ship. Along the top rim of the flag a banner with a red background displays a golden lion. The golden lion banner spans across one third of the flag and represents New Brunswick's ties to the region of Brunswick in Germany and also to the king of England. The flags proportions are written down as 8:5 for the flag of New Brunswick. Before the current flag of Brunswick also used a different version of the New Brunswick flag from 1950-1965. The flag had a dark blue background. The left upper corner was adorned by a Union jack to show the ties to Britain. It also displayed the Coat of Arms of Brunswick in the center of the right half of the flag. For more information on New Brunswick’s flag open up a history book.
