North Carolina Flag
The North Carolina State flag is defined by state law in the statute of North Carolina. Here a short version of the description in the statute for the design of the North Carolina flag. It consists of a blue union (the left side of the flag), containing a white star in the center of the union. On the left of the star in golden color the Letter N and on the right of the star the letter C. Above and below the three symbols are two banners in golden color displaying two dates. Above is the date “May 20th, 1775” and below on the banner is the date “ April 12th, 1776”. These dates are written on the banner in black letters. The right part of the flag is split horizontally into two stripes with the colors red and white, red on the top, white in the bottom.
The dates on North Carolina’s flag indicate two dates very important to the independence movement that make North Carolina a state on the forefront of the movement. May 20th 1775 is the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence while April 12th, 1776 is the date of the Halifax Resolves. The flags of North Carolina history are all somewhat different but the do have in common the choice of colors blue white and red. The NC flag of 1861 had the same division of the field, but the colors were different. The union was red and the stripes were blue on top and white on bottom. This former North Carolina flag also had a different date on the lower banner. It was the date of May 20th, 1861, the date of North Carolina’s recession. The current flag of North Carolina was adopted in 1865, after the flag had to be changed because of its use during the years of secession from the Union of the United States.
