Ohio Flag
The Ohio state flag can easily be seen in the row of United States state flags because of its special shape. The state adopted the flag of Ohio in 1902. Ohio’s flag was designed to John Eisenmann in 1901 for the Pan-American Exposition. The state flag of Ohio is not of rectangular shape but the top and bottom end are tapering down while in the front a triangle is cut out. At the end closest to the flagpole is a dark blue triangle. The triangle represents Ohio’s hills and valleys and bears stars and a circle on it. The rest of the Ohio flag has red and white stripes that represent the roads and waterways of the state of Ohio.
There are seventeen five-pointed stars on the blue triangle that represent Ohio's induction to the Union as seventeenth state. There also is a white circle with a smaller red circle in the center of the white circle. This represents the first letter “O” in Ohio’s name as well as the nickname “Buckeye state”. State flags of Ohio are the only non-rectangular state flags in the United States and also only one of two in the world that are at state level or higher, the other one being the flag of Nepal.
Since it is a non-rectangular flag the national folding method cannot be used properly on the Ohio flag. The proper folding method for the Ohio flags was written up by Alex Weinstock, an Ohio Eagle scout and the procedure was passed into official law by Governor Bob Taft in 2005. The procedure ends up with a neat rectangle unlike the official folding procedure for the United States flag that ends up in a triangle.
