Oman Flag

Oman, or the Sultanate of Oman, is a country of over three million people, and it is located on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia. Until the year 1970, Oman was also known as the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman, and consisted of the country of Oman and part of the United Arab Emirates. It was while Oman carried this name that the first Oman flag was designed.

The first flag of Oman was a simple red banner. This Omani flag was in the standard rectangular shape. There was not one single symbol on the flag of Oman used while it was united with Muscat.

The current Oman flag was adopted in the year 1970, after the country’s union with Muscat had come to an end. A picture of the Oman flag can be found online, but it is also very easy to describe. The Oman flag has a rectangular vertical red stripe down the left hand side. The remainder of the Oman flag is made up of three horizontal stripes of white, red, and green, as seen from top to bottom.

The colors of the Oman flag each have their own meaning. The red stands for the battles for Oman’s independence from foreign invaders. The green stripe represents the fertile Omani land. The white is said to signify peace and prosperity.

You may be wondering: what are the symbols on the flag of Oman mean to represent? The symbol on the flag of Oman is the Sultanate’s emblem. On the Oman flag, this emblem is rendered in white, and is located in the upper left hand corner of the flag, inside the vertical red stripe. The Sultanate’s emblem consists of two crossed swords with a belt and khanjar over them. The khanjar is a type of dagger, and is in fact the traditional dagger of Oman. It is generally carried and depicted in a silver sheath, which is attached to a silver-decorated belt.

There are other flags used besides the national Oman flag. The Oman Naval Ensign has a dark blue background with the national Oman flag in the upper left hand corner. A gold depiction of Oman’s national emblem is found in the lower right hand corner, and is surrounded by a wreath and topped off with a red and gold crown.

The flag of the Sultan has a red background with a green rectangle in the middle. The green rectangle outlines a smaller red rectangle which features a gold depiction of the national emblem of Oman, topped by a gold and red crown.
