Pennsylvania Flag

The Pennsylvania state flag is as so many other state flags composed of a dark blue field with the coat of arms in its center. The coat of arms in the Pennsylvania flag is surrounded by horses on either side or an eagle above. The eagle represents the new nation under one union. The Pennsylvania coat of arms shows a sailing ship, a plow and three shaves of what. These symbols on the flag of Pennsylvania as well as on the Coat of arms represent the state’s commerce and agriculture. On either side of the coat of arms is a symbol, the left side has a stalk of Indian corn and the right side an olive branch. The corn stalk as well as the Olive branch are symbols for the history and the future of Pennsylvania and also represent hope and peace. Just below the coat of arms is a red banner that has the words “Virtue, Liberty and Independence”, the state motto, in black letter written on it.

The first state flag of Pennsylvania displaying the coat of arms was adopted in 1799 and in 1907 the flag, its color and place for the coat of arms were specified. Before the specification, many different versions of the flag existed, some even that uses the United States flag with a coat of arms in the blue union instead of the stars. The blue of Pennsylvania’s flag is the same as the one of the US flag and was chosen in honor of the union as well as to symbolize glory, justice and loyalty. Just recently, at the beginning of the summer of 2007 Pennsylvania is trying to make a change to Pennsylvania’s state flag. The intent is to change the flag by adding a name to the Pennsylvania flag. It is not approved by the governor of Pennsylvania yet, but maybe in the near future, Pennsylvania state flags are required to display the words “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania”.

Pennsylvania flags can be bought at anyone of the many flag stores across the United States as well as at many retailers online. Facts about the Pennsylvania state flag and information on the Pennsylvania flag can be found in many better history books and at some of the official sources online. The history of the Pennsylvania state flag is also described on the official web pages of the state of Pennsylvania. History of Pennsylvania flag as well as pictures of the Pennsylvania flag can also be seen in many museums, especially museums in Pennsylvania.
