Philippines Flag

The Philippines, or the Republic of the Philippines, is a country of over 88 million people, and it is located in Southeast Asia. The Philippines declared its independence from Spain and the United States of America in the year 1898, and the national Philippines flag was adopted that same year.

The Philippine flag history is very short, as there has only been one national Philippines flag. Before the Philippines won its independence, there were several war flags flown during different times. However, these flags are generally not counted as part of the Philippines flag history, as they were not national flags.

The current flag of the Philippines consists of two horizontal stripes of blue and red, as viewed from top to bottom. The Philippines flag also features a white triangle which extends from both the upper and lower left hand corners to a third point near the center of the flag. Within this white triangle is a golden sun with eight rays, surrounded by three golden five pointed stars.

Each part of the Philippines flag has a different meaning. The meanings that follow are the modern official meanings. The blue stripe of the Philippines flag represents truth and peace. The red stripe stands for valor and patriotism. The white triangle signifies equality, and the eight points of its golden sun stand for the first eight provinces of independent Philippines. The golden stars stand for the three geographic areas of the Philippines.

One of the most important things to learn is how to display the Philippine flag properly. The display of the Philippine flag can signify whether the country is at war or not. The proper display of the Philippines flag during peacetime is to fly the flag with the blue stripe at the top. In times of war, the Philippines flag should be flown with the red stripe at the top. Philippines flags can be made especially for this purpose or the Philippines flag can simply be flown upside down. Philippine flag coloring pages are available online, and can be colored by your children in either the peacetime or wartime color schemes.

Like the United States flag, the Philippines flag is not to be displayed at night unless it is properly illuminated. The Philippines also follows the tradition of flying the flag at half-mast during times of national mourning. There is also an official pledge that citizens of the Philippines recite to the Philippines flag.
