Prince Edward Island Flag

The Prince Edward Island flag used as a basis for its design the provincial arms of Prince Edward Island. The flag’s proportion in size is determined to be 3:2. The three borders away from the flagpole have a red and white-banded rim. The upper part of the Prince Edward Island flag as well as upper part of the shield on the Prince Edward Island coat of arms displays an English heraldic lion. It is a golden lion on a red background. This lion appeared on the arms of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and also on the ones of King Edward VII. The lower part, which is two thirds of the flag height display an island with trees. The brown and green of the trees is centered on a white background. The trees on the left appear to be three small oak saplings and the bigger one on the right one great big oak tree. This formation of the tress on the provincial flag of Prince Edward Island represents the three counties of Prince Edward Island, Prince, Queens and Kings in the three little oaks and the great oak that gives protection represents Great Britain. The provincial motto of Prince Edward Island also emphasizes this symbolism. The province’s motto is Para sub ingenti, which means “the small under the protection of the great”. Some say that the red of the flag also stands for the blood lost by Prince Edward Island troops during the war.

The Prince Edward Island coat of arms also includes supporters for the shield and a crest as well as a banner for the state motto. The supporters of the shield are two silver foxes, a very rare Canadian native species. The fox represents Sagacity and wit. The foxes also represent the fur farming industry. A potato blossom necklace around the one fox’s neck and a fishing net around the other foxes net stand for other industries of the island. Above the shield as a crest is a blue jay with a sprig of red oak in its beak. The blue jay as well as the red oak are Prince Edward Island symbols. The blue jay sits on a crown representing royal sovereignty and honoring the Queen of England.

Prince Edward Islands flags can be bought at any of the many flag stores across Canada and the United States. Retailers online also sell several different sizes of the flag of Prince Edward Island and other flag accessories, such as finials, flag storage bags and poles. Pictures of the Prince Edward Island flag can be seen in many better history books. Other sources for Prince Edward Island pictures are the official pages of the province and museums.
