Saskatchewan Flag
The flag of Saskatchewan was in its current form adopted in 1969. The proportions of the flag are determined to be 2:1. The flag is horizontally divided in two stripes. The upper stripe is green and the lower stripe is of golden color. On the left side near the flag pole in the green stripe sits the coat of arms of Saskatchewan. In the center of the right half near the fly is a flower. The flower is a Prairie Lily and has stem and leaves in the golden half, while the red open flower is in the green half. The prairie lily is the official provincial flower of Saskatchewan. The flag was designed by Anthony Drake from Hodgeville,
Saskatchewan. He was the winner of a flag design competition and was drawn from over 4000 entries. Before the current Saskatchewan flag a blue ensign version existed on paper, displaying the Union Jack in the upper left corner and the coat of arms in the center of the right half, closer to the fly and all of that on a blue field. The coat of arms of Saskatchewan displays a red lion on a golden ground in the top part of the shield and three golden wheat shaves on a green background in the lower part of the shield. The meaning of Saskatchewan ‘s flag is a very simple one. The wheat shaves symbolize the importance of Saskatchewan’s agriculture to the province. The Lion is a royal symbol and often seen in British and German coat of arms of royal descent. The green stripe in Saskatchewan’s flag represents the green forest lands in the north of Saskatchewan, while the golden stripe represents the prairie wheat fields in south of Saskatchewan.
For the 60th birthday of the province of Saskatchewan designed a celebration flag that somewhat resembled the current flag. It was also divided into two horizontal stripes, but the top one was red and the bottom was green. The coat of arms was moved to the fly side, in the upper right corner of the flag and a single wheat husk with stem and two leaves in golden color adorned the center of the right half close to the staff.
