South Carolina Flag
The South Carolina state flag has a very simple but impressive design. The South Carolina flag dates easily back to 1765 and the American Revolution and was even when the state seceded from the Union in 1860s.
Some of the symbols on the South Carolina flag date actually as far back as 1765 but some others are newer. South Carolina’s flag displays a crescent moon and a palm tree. The crescent moon is in the upper left corner of the flag while the Palmetto is in the center. The Palmetto is the state tree and also the wood used to fortify the fort on Sullivan Island. The wood of the Palmetto tree was so soft but tough that the cannonballs plain sunk into the wood.
So who created the South Carolina flag? Well, the original design was created in 1775 by Colonel Moutlrie who chose a very simple design and displayed the crescent moon (new Moon) used on soldier caps as the symbol to represent the troops. Almost one hundred years later when South Carolina seceded from the union, a new state banner was needed, despite several design submitted, in the end a changed version of the Moultrie design with an added Palmtree in the center was chosen as the South Carolina state flag. Unlike many other states that were independent from the union South Carolina did not change its design for the flag of South Carolina. The state flag of South Carolina flying over today's state and scenery is the same flag that flew during the Civil War. So if you wondering who made the South Carolina flag in those early days? It is not quite clear, who stitched the first South Carolina flag, but there was sure much controversy about the flag in its history.
