South Dakota Flag
The South Dakota state flag has as so many state flags the state seal on a blue background. In the case of the South Dakota flag it is a variation of the state seal on a sky-blue background. The state seal of South Dakota displays beautiful scenery from South Dakota. In the foreground of the seal a farmer is plowing a field, two horses are pulling the plow. In the midground of the seal a steamboat is steaming up the Missouri river. Right next to the river on the same height as the steamboat is a smolestack giving of smoke. The furnace is representing the mining industry of South Dakota, while the steamboat is a symbol of commerce. Also important to South Dakota is the agriculture, which is represented by the farmer plowing his field. In general the Great Seal of South Dakota is a symbol of the way of life in South Dakota, and therefore a great emblem for the flag of South Dakota.
The seal also represents the states resources. The seal also has a banner in the top area of the inner circle. The words on the banner are “Under God the People Rule”. Around the seal in a circle the words are “State of South Dakota”, “Great Seal” and the date of “1889”. 1889 represents the year of South Dakota’s statehood. The big difference between the seal itself and its representation on the flag is the colors. The seal itself has several colors to make up for the picturesque scene while the seal on the South Dakota flag is on a white background and just a navy blue outline. The flag is outlined by the golden sun. Around the seal in golden letters are the words “South Dakota” and also “The Mount Rushmore state”. The name imprinted on South Dakota’s flag is the nickname of the state due to its very famous National park, that hold the oversize heads of four very famous presidents carved into the walls of Mount Rushmore (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt). Near this monument the flags of actually all 50 United States states are flying.
