Spain Flag
Spain, or the Kingdom of Spain, is a country of over 45 million people, and it is located in Southern Europe. Spain joined the European Union in the year 1986. However, the Spanish flag in use today was adopted before that, in the year 1981.
The flag of Spain history is rather long. Information on the Spain flag can be found going back for many centuries, even to a time when national flags were not common, and flags generally represented royalty or the country at war. The flag of Spain most similar to the one used today was first adopted in the year 1785.
The Spain flag in the year 1785 actually had two different designs. The Spain flag known as the War Ensign, which was used until the year 1843, was made up of three horizontal stripes. The top and bottom stripes were red, and the largest, center stripe was yellow. The yellow stripe of this old Spain flag contained an emblem similar to the Spanish coat of arms. The colors of the Spain flag known as the Merchant Marine’s flag, which was used until the year 1927, were the same, again with a tall center yellow stripe. This time, however, there was a smaller yellow and red stripe both above and below the center yellow stripe, and this Spain flag had no emblem.
From 1873 until 1874, the first Republic of Spain used a flag nearly identical to the Spanish flag called the War Ensign. The second Republic of Spain ruled from 1931 to 1939, and again the Spain flag was changed a bit more. This new Spain flag featured the entire Spanish coat of arms was added within the yellow stripe, and the bottom stripe’s color was changed to purple, with all stripes being equal in size.
Two different Spain flags were used between 1975 and 1981. These Spanish flags restored the red, yellow, red color scheme, again with the center yellow stripe being the tallest. The Spain flag also featured a large eagle with a shield, the design of which was changed a bit over the years.
In the year 1981, the present Spain flag was adopted. The Spain flag retains the red, yellow, red color scheme, and the center yellow stripe is still the tallest. The yellow stripe now contains the exact coat of arms used by Spain, with no additions. When it comes to the meaning of Spain’s flag, there is no clear answer. Information on the Spain flag found online indicates that there is no official explanation of the meaning of the colors of the Spain flag
