Texas Flag

The Texas state flag was first approved in 1836 for the Republic of Texas. This flag is very well known and even has the nickname of “National Standard of Texas”. It displayed a big golden five-pointed star in the center of an azure blue field. This first state flag of Texas flew over the republic of Texas till 1839. A new flag was adopted after the “National Standard of Texas” was the “Lone Star Flag”. These two flags were flags of the Republic of Texas before the state joined the union.

These early flags of Texas had many designers like Sara Dodson, Peter Krag, William Wharton and others. For the longest time the designer of the “Lone Star Flag” was not known until the legislature of Texas put out a House resolution in 1997 stating that Charles B. Stewart from Montgomery County had designed that Republic of Texas flag. The house of Texas called the Texas Lone Star flag an “inspirational banner” and also talked about the “elegant simplicity of his design” (House Resolution 1123).

In 1845 Texas joined as 28th state the union of the United States and brought along the Texas flag called the “Lone Star flag”. But since Texas did not properly reinstate the Texas flag and the flag law, the state of Texas was basically without an official flag from 1879 till 1933. So therefore the Flag Act in 1933 used the design of the former flag of the Republic of Texas and also made sure to specify the colors. The specified colors for Texas flags were blood red, azure blue and white. The meaning of these colors where loyalty (blue), bravery (red) and purity (white). Since Texas specified the colors with color names and these colors did not have a color standard in Texas there still where different versions of the Texas flag available. The Flag Act also did not determine the dimension of the flag and therefore different sized flags also where available. These issues with the flag where solved in 1993 when several statutes took care of this problem.
