United Arab Emirates Flag

The United Arab Emirates, or the UAE, is a federation of seven countries, which together have a population of over four million people, and it is located on the Arab Peninsula in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates is a federal constitutional monarchy that was established in the year 1971. During the same year that the United Arab Emirates was established, the current United Arab Emirates flag was also adopted.

The United Arab Emirates flag contains three horizontal stripes of green, white, and black, as seen from the top to the bottom. The UAE flag also contains a vertical red stripe along the left hand side of the flag. These four colors of green, white, black, and red, as seen on the flag of the UAE, are commonly referred to as the Pan Arab colors. These Pan Arab colors are found on many flags of different Arabic countries, and represent the unity of the Arab nations.

The colors of the United Arab Emirates flag also have their own meanings separate from the Pan Arab color significance. The green stripe of the United Arab Emirates flag stands for fertility, the white stripe signifies neutrality, and the black stripe represents the oil wealth in the United Arab Emirates.

There are other flags of the United Arab Emirates in use besides the national United Arab Emirates flag. One example is the Civil Ensign, which is a red flag with a smaller version of the national UAE flag in the upper left hand corner. The United Arab Emirates flag used by the Head of State is identical to the national United Arab Emirates flag, with the addition of the national coat of arms in the center of the white stripe. Each of the members of the United Arab Emirates also has its own United Arab Emirates flag in addition to the national one. All of these versions of the United Arab Emirates flag contain only two colors. These colors are white and red. Only one of these UAE flags contains an emblem or design of any sort. This is the flag of Umm al Qaiwan, which contains a white crescent moon a white five pointed star, similar to that of Turkey’s flag, but facing to the left rather than to the right. This United Arab Emirates flag also features a vertical white stripe along the left hand side, which Turkey’s flag does not have.
