US Navy Flags
The flag of the United States Navy displays the seal of the Department of the Navy centered in a dark blue background. Below the seal of the Navy a yellow banner holds in dark blue letter the words “United States Navy”. The US Navy flag was adopted in 1959 by President Eisenhower. You will probably never be able to see the US Navy flag flown on a ship at sea or on outdoor flagpoles on naval land installations. It is also not used as a banner or mark to identify the US Navy ships and flags. US Navy flags are usually only seen in offices on land, in parades, on a boat docked in the harbor and in ceremonials occasions. For identifying purposes and use in war the Navy uses Jacks. The origin of the first US Navy flag as a jack was in the war on terrorism. It had a red and white striped background. Thirteen red and white stripes representing the thirteen original colonies and the foreground of the flag is adorned with a snake in yellow and red. Right below the snake were the big words in black letter “DON’T TREAD ON ME”. Also often used is the Union Jack. A dark blue flag with white five-pointed tsars in alternating rows just like the Union Jack in the national flag of the United States. These Jacks are usually displayed and flown on warships and other special ships. They fly when the sip is dressed for special occasions.
Origins of the US Navy flag reach back to the first unofficial flags used by the Navy. It was a flag with a dark blue background just like the current one. The center of the flag displayed a white diamond with a fouled anchor. The fouled anchor nowadays used by the Marines flag and seal was included in the Navy flag. The flag when first officially adopted in 1959 was determined to have the size of four feet four inches in height and five feet six inches in width. The flag should be rimmed by a golden yellow fringe with a width of 2 ½ inches.
Pictures of the US Navy flag can be found in many history books and pages on the Internet. Navy flags are available to the average consumer, but they are not as commonly flown as other United States official flags. Especially because of the flags proper use as just a ceremonial flag. Some of the original flags can be found in Navy and other history museums. More information and facts can be found on many Internet pages as well as with the US Navy.
