The latin words translated mean “thus always to tyrants”. The seals background is white and is rimmed with white but right inside that rim are red Virginia creepers with green leaves.

When flying the Virginia flag the fly is supposed to have a white silk fringe. The Virginia seal and flag were designed originally by the jurist George Whyte in 1776. In 1954 the General Assembly of Virginia also added an official salute to the state flag of Virginia. The salute is “I salute the flag of Virginia with reverence and patriotic devotion to the ‘Mother of States and Statesmen,’ which it represents-the ‘Old Dominion, where liberty and independence were born.
