Washington Flag

The Washington state flag also displays the state’s seal, but instead of a dark blue background it features field of dark green. Washington’s state flag is the only one to have a green field and the only one to depict the portrait of an American president. When flying as an official flag a golden fringe on the fly is a very common sight, but is optional for everybody else. The flag shows George Washington. George Washington’s face is displayed on a light blue background and surrounded by a golden rim. The rim holds the words “THE SEAL OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON” and the date of 1889. In 1889 Washington entered the United States union was the 42nd state. The state of Washington flag was adopted in 1923 and before that date no official Washington flag existed.

Around the beginning of the 1900s Washington residents flew a blue military flag with Washington’s portrait in the center. So what does the Washington flag represent? It represents a way to honor the first president of the United States and celebrating Washington's entering the statehood. The colors of the Washington state flag in the unofficial version were different and used several different colors. There were versions with purple fields and versions with green fields. In 1923 when the official State flag of Washington was adopted the color of the field was determined to be green as well as were the other colors of the Washington state flag. The seal on Washington’s state flag has to be stitched on both sides per state legislature which makes it one of the most expensive United States state flag. Manufacturers that want to sell or reproduce the flag of Washington need to send two sample version of their handywork into the Washington Secretary of state and upon approval one version will be archived with the office.
