Zambia Flag

Another very interesting flag is the flag of Zambia. The Zambia flag was adopted in 1964, to be precise on October 24th, 1964. The design of Zambia’s flag was slightly change in 1996 from its original version. The Zambian flag has the colors green, red, black and orange. Zambian flag colors each represent a very special attribute or symbol of Zambia. The green color in the flag of Zambia represents the countries riches in natural resources. The red in the Zambian flag is a symbol for the freedom struggle of the Zambian people. Black stands for the people of Zambia and orange symbolizes the mineral wealth of the country. The eagle with its spread wings that is located in the upper right corner of the Zambia flag stands for the Zambian’s ability to rise above any problems that face the nation. The major part of the flag is in green and a small vertical tricolor in red, black and orange is located just below the eagle in the lower right corner and is slightly higher than the center of the flag. The change in 1996 included a change from the original darker green to a lighter and clearer green as well as some change to the eagle itself. The flag was designed by Gabriel Ellison. She also designed many of Zambia’s stamps as well as the national coat of arms.

Zambia flags can be bought at several online stores and can be seen on lots of online pages alongside with other countries flags. Most pages also give a short history of either the flag or the country itself. Another good source for pictures of the Zambia flag are history books or museums.

Small Zambia flags can be found on fan and flag accessories, such as cups, pens, screensavers and more. The Zambian coat of arms sometimes displayed on government flags also includes the eagle. The coat of arms symbolizes Zambia's way of living in several ways. The coat of arms consists of a black man and a black woman holding a shield. Above the shield is a pick and a hoe crossed and above that the eagle. On the grass at the people’s feet are a zebra and the shaft opening of a mine. Rimming the grass is a corncob and a banner with the words “One Zambia one nation”. The shield has wavy black and white stripes that represent the Victoria Falls. The tools stand for labor and agriculture as well as for mining, the eagle represents the freedom of Zambia and to rise above problems. The man and woman represent the Zambian family, the men dressed in bush shirt and bush shorts just like a worker and the woman dresses in a traditional dress.
